About Gagra

The resort city of Gagra is situated on the Black sea cost in Abkhazia. As a resort Gagra was established in 1903 by Duke Alexander Petrovich of Oldenburg. During the Georgian-Abkhazian war in 1992-1993 Gagra was at the centre of the fighting and suffered heavy damage.

In today's Gagra the well-known Seaside park, restaurant “Gagripsh”, Prince of Oldenburg Castle and a colonnade, with the located nearby Winter theater have remained.

According to 2011 Census data, the population of the city is 12 364 inhabitants.


Geography

The city is located 36 km from Sochi Airport on the shore of the bay. The mountains create a microclimate, protecting the city from the cold winds and keeping the warm sea air. As a result Gagra is the warmest place of the Black Sea coast.

Climate in Gagra is humid , subtropical. The average annual temperature is + 18 ° C. Winters are warm : +11 ° C, +15 ° C, summers are hot and humid +25 ° C, +35 ° C. Sometimes the temperature can reach +40 ° C. Sea water is heated to +29 ° C ... +33 ° C.
